As I begAn my fIrst dAy on the job at Retirement Advisor, the old adage
that the more things change, the more they stay the same seemed especially
apt. The first item on my agenda when I walked in the door was to write this
column. deadline in three days. After 20 years in journalism, I have found
working under deadlines is an expectation that never changes.
Looking for inspiration, and perhaps a topic that might make sense to an
industry newcomer, I began reading columns written by this publication’s
former editor, daniel Williams. I was more than a little amused to read his
parting column in which he admitted to googling “annuities” during his first
day on the job. That was one of the first things I did as well. I hope that’s a
sign I’m on the right track.
Change can be both exciting and intimidating. I come to Retirement Advisor
after nearly two decades covering the wireless communications industry. On
my first day on the job in that industry, I had to look up several unfamiliar
words as well, but I didn’t have the benefit of google all those years ago.
I actually had to use a telecom encyclopedia that was very likely out of date
by the time I needed it. Things certainly have changed since then.
What hasn’t changed is that learning about anything new is often a
collaborative effort. google answered my question about annuities with
some helpful definitions, links to current news articles and other useful
information. but I know that annuities and other industry topics will come
into a stronger focus for me when I have the opportunity to learn about
them from you.
I’m excited to throw myself into a new industry and continue to provide the
great coverage I’ve seen in the pages of this magazine as I begin to wrap my
mind around new topics, terminology, regulations and people. I look forward
to having the opportunity to hear from you — the people who drive this
industry — about what issues and trends are most important to you. Learning
about an industry through the eyes of those most passionate about it has
always been one of my favorite parts of being a journalist. And that’s one
thing not likely to change anytime soon.
